Other Food StoriesUrban renaissanceBy Dominique RitterComfort food makes a comeback.
This is the kind of place where before long you’ll know the names of all the staff, and dinner conversation may well involve Ryan Gray, the affable and savvy sommelier, or a visit from chef Emma Cardarelli, whose inventions tend toward market fare with strong Italian and French influences. Liverpool House is the second of three casual, comfortable and sincerely good restaurants opened by chef-owners David McMillan and Frédéric Morin with their partner Allison Cunningham along Montréal’s Notre-Dame Street. This fast-reviving stretch between the Atwater Market and downtown – formerly the exclusive domain of antique stores that shut their doors at 6 p.m. – has become another neighborhood to love, with a cupcake shop (Itsi Bitsi) and the requisite local watering hole (the Burgundy Lion). The warm atmo-sphere back at Liverpool House quickly makes you feel at home. And if that doesn’t convince you to keep going back, Cardarelli’s ricotta gnocchi just might.
