Nova Scotia: Where surfers chill

Photographer Josh Webb catches a wave – no wetsuit required.

On location: I got up at 4 a.m. on a crisp December morning to start shooting the surfers at sunrise on Lawrencetown Beach, near Halifax. I was there till sundown. There was a light dusting of snow from the night before that made everything beautiful and bright.

That’s Neal Durling in the photo, a professional surfer from Halifax, but people come from all over the world to surf in Nova Scotia. It’s actually better in winter: The waves are right, the winds are right and it’s generally sunny.

The local vibe: They’re real salt-of-the-earth people on the Nova Scotia shore. And the surfers respect the land, so the landowners respect the surfers. Everyone wants to stop and talk to you – they’ll ask if the water’s cold, if you want a bite to eat...
