Montréal The perfect excuse for staying inside: taking in some of the over 250 films at the International Festival of Films on Art – the largest of its kind in the world. Architecture, archaeology, dance and design will all be explored on the silver screen. Past films have featured multimedia icon Bruce Nauman and “human camera” Stephen Wiltshire, an artist with a photographic memory who produces astonishingly lifelike work. The festival venues themselves, including the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Cinquième Salle at Place des Arts, bring you to the heart of the city’s art scene. Mar. 18–28, 2010
Edmonton Edmonton goes epicurean for 10 taste-bud-tingling days as part of its seventh annual Downtown Dining Week. Urban gourmands will be spoiled with a diverse selection of prix fixe menus for under $50. Cozy bistro dining at Sorrentino’s, fresh local fare like Alberta tenderloin wrapped in home-smoked bacon and braised bison short ribs at The Copper Pot and authentic Italian cuisine at Rigoletto’s have all been past favorites on the circuit. Mar. 5–14, 2010
Toronto Lose yourself in the dreamlike soundscapes of Symphonie fantastique during Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s Masterworks series. The influential Romantic work by French composer Hector Berlioz, which follows the story of a gifted artist with a lively imagination, is part of a triple bill also featuring Spanish flamenco guitar virtuoso Pepe Romero in Concierto de Aranjuez and La Oración del torero (“The Bullfighter’s Prayer”) for a fired-up finale. Mar. 24, 25, 2010, at 8 p.m.
Newfoundland and Labrador Send out the last month of winter with a week of icy fun in Happy Valley–Goose Bay, where the SnoBreak festival celebrates its 10th anniversary. Visitors can enjoy a hearty homemade chowder, a traditional boil-up of fresh seafood or the Newfoundland specialty “fish and brewis” (salted cod with sea biscuits soaked overnight and cooked until tender) at one of the community lunches before breaking out their skates on the outdoor shinny rink or trying their hand at ice sculpture under the guidance of master carver and celebrity chef Steve Watson. Mar. 20–27, 2010
